Cycle 5
Relapse Prevention
Setting Boundaries
Cycle 5 Session 25- Setting Boundaries
Self-Reflection Questions
WHO do you represent in the lives of the people you are around?
WHAT are your boundaries when it comes to your daily tasks?
WHERE do you feel your boundaries are most challenged?
WHY should you always set boundaries around your sleep and self-care (VESPM)?
WHEN something unplanned pops up, how do you normally handle it?
HOW do others show you that they have boundaries?
Personal boundaries
A person's boundaries are based on their V.E.S.P.M. plan. To know a person's boundaries is to know their stand on Values, Ethics, Spirituality, Physical, and Mental. This changes throughout life as we grow.
Self-Reflection Points
Be attentive; people's boundaries can change. What was okay yesterday may not be okay today. NO means NO and STOP means STOP!
Some people even set boundaries around the people in their inner circle, like a child or a mate. Ask questions like, Do you mind if I give them ...? or Is it okay if I talk to them about...? This can vary from person to person.
Be aware of "Emotional Boundary Manipulators" (EBM) they will try to use your emotions to manipulate you to let down your boundaries. These people don't respect your boundaries.
Try not to overplan. Leave space for that unplanned thing that will pop up. It's called life! If you get overwhelmed, you cannot help anyone.
Avoid making promises. It's better to start with a "No" or "I'll have to see if I can." It's better to check your schedule first than say "Yes" and get overwhelmed or not keep your word. People will respect you for being honest.
*"Boundaries are not the walls you build to block things from coming in and out. Boundaries are based on your V.E.S.P.M. beliefs and should be used as filters, monitoring the things coming in and out." -TM Russell
