Respecting Others' Boundaries
Cycle 6 Session 27 - Respecting Others' Boundaries
Self-Reflection Questions
WHO really sets our boundaries?
WHAT are some ways you can show your respect for others' boundaries when in the general public?
WHERE is a place where you may find people with unclear boundaries? What should you do?
WHY should you ask questions if you are unclear about someone's boundaries?
WHEN is the only time you may have to overstep someone's boundaries?
HOW should you act if someone reacts to you overstepping their boundaries?
Self-Reflection Points
A person's boundaries are like their home. Don’t assume it is right for you to enter their space or “home” without clear permission. Even if the gate is open!
When entering a person's physical home, don't just walk in and "make yourself comfortable" unless you are told to do so. Don't assume, no matter what the relationship. It's a sign of respect.
Some public spaces, or crowded places like transportation, family gatherings, locker rooms, or events, can be overwhelming for people. Respecting boundaries can be difficult in these situations. Using manners and being respectful is usually the best way to handle these situations.
In some cultures, talking to the opposite sex is crossing a boundary. Some people don't like to be touched, and parents can also have particular boundaries with their children. You can never be sure. Don't assume.
A person can feel like you have "gone too far" with a simple hug or an innocent joke. Practice social awareness & universal etiquette, especially when around people you don't know.
Due to different cultures, upbringings, and even trauma, we all have different feelings about our personal space. You may mean no harm; however, it is appropriate not to overreact when we get asked to back away.
